You know when you read a critic’s review of a film and it goes something along the lines of, “Once this film gets its hooks in you, it never lets go”…?
… We Need to Talk About Kevin actually IS one of those movies.
Over the course of 112 minutes, writer/director Lynne Ramsey constructs an oversized grappling hook, fits it to the nines with razor blades, plunges it deep into your chest and gradually yanks you into the screen to the point that, by the film’s (literally) jaw-dropping conclusion, you are uncontrollably leaning forward… your eyes wide as saucers… unable to breathe.
It is undeniably disturbing and wholeheartedly horrific, second (probably) only to swallowing broken shards of glass, but is nonetheless a film you should see. It won’t allow you to do otherwise, anyway.
